lastlesson?

October 31, 2008

So here’s the deal..

we started to make the posters… but they are very time consuming so we didn’t fully finish them

so we’re going to finish them on sunday when shruthi comes over to my place!

and we’re also going to make a speech .. seeing as we had originally thought that we were onyl supposed to have a stall and just explain our things from there…. but apparently not. so we’re gonig to make that speech.. just explaining it… then put the facts and timeline of the two posters

and that shall be done on sunday

plus the final touch ups

maybe we should wear costumes?

till then!

nothing much to report on from last friday because we just went into the library and tried to finish off the posters.

this weekend we are going to meet up and do the finishing touches… and go from there… arghhh! still need to find a solution to that robot problem!

shall do it maybe today… it’s sunday

i think today is what like.. the third last lesson we have?

great… and we havent even got the robot yet! boo.. we really need to pressure ms grainger into getting us one or at least compromise heaps

sooo instead of worrying too much about the robot we decided to work on our posters that we thought we would put up for the judges, parents and friends could have a look at… then we shuold expain em from there…

anyway… we still havent watched our movies yet so shruthi and i are going to watch in on saturday!

its all organised

yayyy finalllyyyy

oh and we decided that we’re not going to the state library because we have no business there =)

so we’ll see if we can get anything out of those movies and we’ll report back to you then!

October 15, 2008

Yay!

I actually went according to my plan and visited the Parkdale (instead of the Chelsea) Library and finished off the Progress report along with it’s Powerpoint presentation.

By the way.. the library had made 80 cents of profit out of us!! Just for a few A4 sheets of paper =( So much for this project not having to cost us anything… haha just kidding.

So Shruthi and I sat down and completed our progress report, picking out what each other would say and then we set out to find some more books that the LIbrary had available and found 4 books on Robotics, robots and of course Artificial Intelligence.

Now all we have to do is go back to Shruthi’s house,  fix up the powerpoint and print out our Delicious account tags… because we’re definately not going to print off at this library… waste our 20 cents.. hmph!

Then in the near future we MUST read some of those books, write everything out onto a sheet of paper of all the information we have gathered, talk to Mrs Grainger on how we are to go about making or attaining the robot to present to the class and then maybe make the design and go from there.

So, until then…

Naomi

next day

October 11, 2008

Hello

Well I was supposed to post a blog on Friday but I didn’t get a chance to so here I am today (Saturday) writing my post that was supposed to be on Friday!

So… on Friday Shruthi and I got together and made a decision that we would go to Chelsea Library after school on Wednesday – this is after we checked the Opening hours for that Kingston Library – until closing time which is 8pm and do some more extensive researching there. And I just had an idea… that I would look for ideas on how to build the model of the robot! At the Chelsea Library of course… Good idea, Naomi =)

We also decided that we would go on the weekend to the State Library seeing as one, we love it so much, and two, it’s just so big! The possibilities are endless!

We also decided, on Friday, that we had better get cracking if we wanted to give a full oral progress report on Thursday so we made up a Powerpoint – to enhance our performance haha – and we began to make our speech.

We did not do much of the researching in that lesson but thought that this would be an ongoing research project seeing as at the moment we are unable to go according to our plan.

Now, I must be off… I need to finish off the Powerpoint in accordance to my speech and then practise them with Shruthi!

Goodnight,

Naomi

3rd lesson

October 9, 2008

Well well well…

So this is my… 4th post.. and apprently I’m only supposed to have done only 2…?

It’s because I took the time in the holidays, under false pretences and I posted one then. It’s not as bad though, I was going to post another one on the holidays, thinking that I had to post 2 on the holidays (Thanks Mr.Carter!). Ah well….

So today… I realised that these Science Spectacular sessions are actually really easy to ‘wag’ but of course, I wouldn’t do that because truthfully, I’m beginning to like our topic.

Mrs.Grainger expects us to have done ALL of our research by today which honestly sounds ridiculous seeing as we have only had two computer lessons, both of them we were actually trying to get started with this WordPress and Delicious things, as they were both new concepts to us. But, I feel as if I haven’t done much research so I am going to continue researching until I feel as if I have enough information to design my model… obviously I won’t leave the ‘designing’ part until the last minute… hopefully, but I will definately need more research. And so, I have done some this lesson…

We decided to find any books that were available in the library and we were successful in the good old encyclopaedias so we photocopied them because of the relevant information it withheld. It talks about Artificial Intelligence software and how it is applied to computers and relates it to a physician not having to use mathematical methods to provide a diagnosis to an illness but relies instead on their expertise, training and education they have experienced.
In another book in the World Book encyclopaedia, we found a proper definiton of the word/s ‘Artificial Intelligence’. It explains some of it’s background including giving information on is being a ‘scientific field’ that began at a workshop at Dartmouth College in 1956. It talks of the first meeting where some scientists united and brought along with them the first computer programs that were capable of logical reasoning, learning, and even playing board games!

Shruthi and I have agreed that we are to definately find some time, maybe next week to go to the State Library… possibly on the weekend but if we are unable to go, we could visit the Chelsea Library instead and do more and more research… maybe after a school day or something.

I must say that I am disappointed in our progress in this project as it is not going according to plan, nothing ever does really. But it says that we should be currently at the point in time of almost finishing our hadcore researching, thinking up ideas on the design of our model and writing up our progress report as it is to be due in the next Thursday’s lesson – verbal and written!

Hopefully I will think of dedicating more time to research in my project.. meet up with Shruthi in the near future and do HARDCORE-HARDCORE researching along the way as well as begin to come up of ideas on how we are going to construct our model.. and of course watch the couple of movies on AI including Eagle eye, A.I and iRobot.

Until next time!

Maybe and me

September 27, 2008

ok so what this is my…. 2nd post?

well to be honest… i haven’t really done must research and i’m not quite sure as to how i’m going to structure my posts even though it suggest some ways in our handbook that was given out to us. So, I’m going to start by saying what I think I should learn by the end of this session, what I have learnt at the end of the session and I what I hope to do next time. Then of course, I will give out a few website addresses that I have picked up along the way.

Ok so.. What I hope to learn this lesson is a more detailed introduction to the world of Robotics and the idea of artificial intelligence, even though in my plan I have written; by the end of September 18th I would be doing ‘hardcore researching’ and ideas for building model…oops. See, this is what I don’t understand… No offence or anything to the teachers but, how exactly are we supposed to have researched and majorly understood this whole Science Spectacular thing on the holidays? They are expecting too much! We are supposed to ENJOY and RELAX on our holidays not have to be doing work and stressing over a Science project. Argh… homework should be illegal.

Ok well I’m glad I got that off my chest. Now…
Here’s my first site: http://cordis.europa.eu/ictresults/index.cfm/section/news/tpl/article/id/89632
It has a comparison of children and robots. It says that (and this is part of what I am learning for this session) children learn from experience – trial and error and most of the time we think that robots have to calculate every move they make. For example calculators have a specific program that structures their thinking… something like that.

“Traditional robotics relies on having the robots carry out complex calculations, such as measuring the geometry of an object and its expected trajectory if moved. But COSPAL has turned this around, making the robots perform tasks based on their own experiences and observations of humans. This trial and error approach could lead to more autonomous robots and even improve our understanding of the human brain” (excerpt from the website http://cordis.europa.eu/ictresults/index.cfm/section/news/tpl/article/id/89632)
This seems impossible, yet this idea is currently being carried out by COSPAL – the project that researchers from Linköping University in Sweden are working on. Researchers are trying to get robots to recognise objects without them having to recognise them based on geometric calculations and a visual input in which they are pre-programmed to do.

I am now becoming intrigued in this topic and are starting to enjoy it. YAY! I’m glad I chose this topic now.

“Robotic technology is advancing apace and now a top team of European scientists and engineers hope to make the leap from single function ‘dumb’ machines to adaptive learning machines”

Ok so that’s basically one idea of Artificial Intelligence, next blog I’m hoping to find more ideas based on the concept of AI, but for now that’s what I’ve researched because now I need to ENJOY my holidays.
Next time… I’m also hoping to meet up with Shruthi (on my holidays), watch AI and iRobot and she suggested just before when I spoke to her… to go to the State Library and research more there. Sometime next week maybe…

OH and also.. just a note to myself… I should probably go on AskNow next time I research just to get a more broad researching.

I’ll keep in touch, and maybe even add more to this blog later… maybe.

My first blog

September 16, 2008

So…Here’s what Shruthi and I (that’s my partner) have done so far…

Our topic will be on Artificial intelligence and hopefully we can try to make a robot. I’m not quite sure on how this is going to work but I was thinking we could maybe get some parts from Dick Smith Electronics and hence make up the body from that?

Some more research ideas – iRobot, Minds Machines and me (the lecture Shruthi and I went to at Melbourne University, I must try to find the notes I made on it…), google and of course Asknow, I could ask them if there is any information on the possibility of Robots having a mind at the present time.

Presentation ideas – Build model of robot, Speech explaining the possibility of a mind in a robot or the impossibility, Build a microphone from a Dick Smith Electronics Kit and speak into it, pretend it’s the Robot speaking =)

We then had to use the Plan Proforma to write up a plan. I’m just going to finish that now as it is due next lesson.

So that’s all for our first lesson, next lesson we should start to research about Robots and maybe start to research about minds in robots.

See you next time!
